The John Lee-directed movie False Positive has been permanently engraved in my brain, but not for a good reason. The film is not your average contemporary horror film such as Hush (2016), The Conjuring Series (2013-2021), and a series such as YOU (2018). There is obvious inspiration from 1968’s Rosemary’s Baby but is not a remake of it. The film uses experimental techniques, erratic sequences, and ultimately a captivating plot to shine a VERY bright light on the horrors surrounding pregnancy and class.
I had the pleasure of watching this movie with my soccer team for a classic movie night. We wanted to watch something in between the horror and thriller spectrum and this film caught most eyes due to its intriguing poster art. After finishing the film most of us, if not all of us, walked out of the room feeling some level of regret. I do not recommend this movie to anyone under the age of 15 considering the very graphic and random scenes within the film.
The cast includes people such as Pierce Brosnan who have appeared in other movies such as Mamma Mia!, Justin Theroux who is Seamus O’ Grady (former boyfriend to Dylan Sanders) in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and Ilana Glazer who appeared in Rough Night in 2017. Ilana Glozer, also known as Lucy in False Positive, created the screenplay also with John Lee and Alissa Nutting. The acting within this film is what gave it its thrilling, creepy, and unsettling theme from beginning to end. It ultimately is what made the quality of the movie as good as it was.
However, there are some instances where the plot is hard to follow. There are a couple of scenes that seem to be hallucinations, but are so sudden and random it’s hard to make sense of why they are there in the first place. There is a VERY explicit sequence within that film that involves Pierce Brosnan, who acts as Dr. Hindle, which proves this point further. Unfortunately, the scene is so graphic, all I can say is…if you know you know.
What started off as an exciting horror movie turned into a very flat and unnecessarily explicit film.
